KIT Research-Hub for Sustainable Energy Production

Background and Context:

The design brief centres on the transformation of KIT’s former plant into a research hub for sustainable energy management.
As part of its contribution to the energy transition, KIT focused on researching alternative methods of energy generation through the production of fuels from biomass. This building complex used for this purpose  to be repurposed in the long term as a research hub for sustainable energy management. As part of the KIT Energy Lab, the ‘Centre for Electrification of Chemical Processes (CECP)’ is to be established here in future.

Objectives of the Transformation

The existing building, a multi-storey steel-frame structure with integrated laboratory containers, is to be transformed accordingly in terms of both its function and structure. It is intended to serve as a platform for research, demonstration, learning and communication relating to innovative energy technologies.

In addition to providing space for the process modules and technical installations (some of which will be housed in containers) as well as test stations for electrochemical reactors, the functional requirements also include space for student training (workshops), workspaces, seminar and meeting rooms, and areas for ‘networking’ and socialising.

The design aims to explore the tension between the existing industrial structure and new research architecture. The existing steel structure should be viewed as offering structural and spatial potential, and forms the starting point for the development of new spatial qualities. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the existing structure, new installations and functional areas, as well as to the organisation of access, the quality of the environment and work processes

Vision: A Symbol of a Sustainable Energy Future

A key component of the brief is the development of a suitable corporate architecture concept, which also includes a façade design that fosters a sense of identity and makes a strong public impact.

The new research hub is intended to showcase the scientific excellence and innovative strength of the Energy Lab and position the building as a flagship project for sustainable energy research at KIT.

In addition to design aspects, issues relating to sustainability, climate adaptation, the use of natural light, energy efficiency and media integration (building services) must be taken into account. The architectural concept to be developed should use the industrial character of the existing building as a starting point to create a contemporary research environment and, through this transformation, send a visible signal of the shift towards a sustainable energy future.
